A re-creation of a small Andalucian pueblo by the sea at Salobrena, Costa Tropical de Granada.

This attractive development of just 22 units was the brainchild of a talented local architect well known for his faithful re-creations of the Andalucian pueblo style. Although he is no longer with us, over the past 30 years the influence of Alfonso Cardenas on the area to the west of Salobrena is immediately obvious to anyone visiting the area. Calamedina is popular with people looking for the convenience of a "lock-and-go" holiday home but also seeking the aesthetic appeal of an Andalucian pueblo.

Each property is different and most have magnificent views directly to the sea and to Salobrena castle. Some have garages, and all have use of the excellent community pool which is kept full and clean all year round. However, owing to the fact that for most of the year only around half of the properties tend to be occupied at any one time, the pool area is seldom busy.

In designing Calamedina Alfonso was trying to imitate the small villages that are found inland in Andalucia and transferring their most attractive qualities to a prime location on the coast. Without a doubt this pueblo style development is very rare along the coast and as far as we know is unique. Ordinarily purchasers who are looking for the "picture postcard" Spanish style properties with narrow streets, geraniums in pots and traditional features have to decide between this and the lifestyle found in the hotter and drier inland areas and the sea and comfortable coastal climate.

Piece by piece Alfonso skillfully created a complex design of interlocking properties, none of which are the same in design and layout and in doing so created an interesting and attractive location for both living and holiday homes. The development has had about 25 years to mature and now very much has an established and traditional feel of an authentic small Spanish village.

Calamedina Pool

Positioned on the side of an undeveloped hill which runs down to the ever changing Mediterranean sea Calamedina is very private and secluded and unknown to many people living in nearby Salobreña. The area still remains very undeveloped with only a handful of luxury villas in the same area. From the properties you can walk to Salobrena along the coast following paths across rustic land. About ten minutes walk in the opposite direction along the coast is Hotel Salobrena where residents can easily go for a drink, meal or enjoy events and entertainment in the hotel.

The community consists of a number of nationalities with Danish, British, German and Spanish all being represented. Many of the owners do not reside in their properties in Calamedina but visit the property when convenient for either short or long stays. Whilst you can rent out properties here most owners choose not to.

Communal facilities include:

  • a large and well maintained communal pool
  • a communal library with computer and broadband/ADSL
  • a WIFI system
  • satellite reception for both SKY and Danish channels.
